HTC x Luxury Vehicles
What: An HTC tablet concept
Who: Luxury Vehicle Manufacturers
Where: HTC Concept/Industrial Design Internship, Taipei, Taiwan
When: HTC Summer Internship, Summer 2015, over a 2 week period
Why: To design a tablet for an imagined collaboration between HTC and a luxury vehicle manufacturer
How: Responding to the design brief "design an HTC tablet for a luxury vehicle manufacturer", I spent two weeks to conceptualize, 3D model and 2D/3D render a tablet concept during my summer internship at HTC. This project was an introduction to my time at HTC and served as an introduction to the techniques of 3D modeling in Creo Parametric and 2D/3D rendering in Adobe Illustrator and Keyshot, and to the design methodology of the HTC Concept Design group. My initial ideation took several different design directions, from a tilted screen incorporated into the design of the tablet in order to facilitate viewing of the tablet in an armrest dock to a design that incorporated the user interface of the luxury vehicle manufacturer's proprietary application. I came to realize that luxury vehicles evoke luxury through the precision engineering of their hardware, and the materials and craftsmanship used in the cockpit. Together, these two aspects create a sensory experience for the end suer. I ultimately chose to focus on materiality for my tablet concept, engaging with the user's sense of touch and sight when they remove the tablet from the armrest dock. Wanting to echo the materials used in the rest of the vehicle, I designed a tablet that incorporated the wood paneling, chrome accents and leather upholstery that is often found in luxury vehicle design.
